You are suffering from a major health issue and decide it is time to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Before you do apply, you should take the time to see how the Social Security Office defines disabled. Also, you should make sure you have enough work credits to qualify for SSDI. With this information on hand, it is time to apply. But how do you apply? There are three different ways available.

Apply at Your Local Social Security Office

You can apply for SSDI in person at the office closest to your home. The locations that are closest to our offices are:

607 W. Northland Ave

Appleton, WI 54911

877-694-5495

1561 Dousman St

Green Bay, WI 54303

888-862-4811

400 City Center STE B

Oshkosh, WI 54901

877-445-0834

If you are not in the Fox Valley area, you can find your nearest location at the Social Security website’s Office Locator page. You will want to call ahead and get the list of paperwork that is needed to make sure you have everything when you show up. Be prepared for a long wait as there is only so many representatives available at each location to handle all the people that show up.

Apply by Telephone

If you are unable to get to the local office, you can apply by telephone. For the Fox Valley, the phone numbers to call are:

Appleton: 877-694-5495

Green Bay: 888-862-4811

Oshkosh: 877-445-0834

If do not live in the valley, you can call the general number, which is 1-800-772-1213. Again, you may want to check to see what paperwork is needed to apply before you make the call. You can look online for the list at the Social Security Disability Website. Be prepared for a long wait on the phone.

Apply Online

In today’s world, you can do almost anything online and applying for SSDI is no different. You just go the Social Security Disability Website and click the “Apply for Disability” button. Before you click on the button, scroll down the page to the section titled “Information You Need to Apply”. It is best to get that information together before you start your application so that the online process goes smoothly. The online process does take a few hours to complete. You can save your application, take a break, and come back to it later if you need to.

What Happens After You Apply?

After you apply, the Social Security Office starts to review your application. If they need more information from you or if they have questions for you, they will contact you. You can also check the status of your application on their website. Once they have finished reviewing your application, they will send you a letter with their decision. Hopefully, you are approved. If you are not, then it is time to contact an attorney to review why you were denied and what options you have to appeal. If you are denied, there is only so much time to file an appeal, so get in contact with an attorney as soon as possible.
